Early Autism Intervention

Early Intervention Services for Autism

Ascend Autism’s early intervention program provides ABA therapy for young children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

At Ascend Autism, our early intervention autism services focus on developing skills typically associated with the first two or three years of life, such as physical control, cognitive ability, social skills, emotional regulation, and communication. We tailor our center-based and in-home services to your child’s unique needs and incorporate a scientifically supported approach to early intervention therapy in a warm, nurturing environment.

What is an Early Intervention Program?

In the autism community, “early intervention” has two different meanings. Every state has a state-funded/federal-funded early intervention program that provides support and therapy services to babies and children (up to age three) with developmental delays or disabilities. These programs also provide support to these children’s families, often at a low cost or no cost to the family. More broadly, early intervention simply means any type of intervention or therapy that begins as early as possible in a child’s life.

State-funded/federal-funded early intervention programs can include many types of therapy services, including speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and applied behavior analysis therapy.

Does My Child Need an Official Autism Diagnosis?

Many states require an official autism diagnosis for insurance to cover ABA services. In the states we serve – New York, Connecticut, and Tennessee – a diagnosis is required.   The earlier your child can get diagnosed and start ABA therapy, the sooner your child can start making significant progress. You can receive a diagnosis from a medical specialist, such as a psychologist or developmental pediatrician. Regular screenings are extremely important for young children so a doctor can identify whether your child is meeting developmental milestones on time. Children should receive checkups at nine months, 18 months, and 24-30 months old to identify developmental delays and determine if a comprehensive evaluation for autism is recommended. It is well established that clinicians are now able to diagnose autism as early as 18 months old.

The Benefits of Early Childhood Intervention Programs

While it’s become widely accepted that early intervention programs are beneficial for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, what exactly makes an early intervention program such a powerful tool for these children? Early intervention programs work so well for young children because their brains are still developing. Early intervention therapies have a better chance of having long-term effects on the child’s development and overall quality of life. In some instances, early intervention can prevent challenging behaviors from developing into challenging habits.

Beginning early intervention ABA therapy immediately following an autism diagnosis not only offers your child the best foundation possible but also increases their chances of reaching their full potential. The sooner your child receives assistance, the greater the likelihood of improved learning and progress.

Early intervention for autism can help your child in some of the following ways:

  • Encourage positive behaviors and discourage negative behaviors
  • Teach self-control and emotional regulation
  • Develop functional communication and social skills
  • Develop the skills of transferring behaviors from one situation to the next
  • Build habits that help children cope as they get older

Helping Children And Families Succeed!

Ascend Autism’s ABA Early Intervention Program

Early intervention ABA therapy at Ascend Autism is open to children aged 18 months to seven years old. Children receive one-on-one ABA therapy in a naturalistic, play-based setting for a total of 20-40 hours per week. Given the significant amount of weekly hours, a center-based ABA early intervention program is strongly recommended for children aged 18 months to 5 years old.

Everything we do is geared toward measurable success and the best possible outcomes. Our early intervention autism specialists partner with you to create a loving and stimulating atmosphere for your child, whether that be at home or in one of our centers. You can find center-based autism therapy services at one of our ABA therapy centers in Hawthorne, New York, Westport, Connecticut, or Nashville, Tennessee. In-home services for early intervention ABA are available in Westchester County, New York, and throughout Connecticut.

How Does Ascend Autism’s ABA Early Intervention Program Work?

To get started with our ABA early intervention program, learn about our enrollment process or fill out our online enrollment form. When you enroll, we will set up an appointment with you and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) for an initial assessment.

The Initial Assessment

Enrolling your child in our early intervention ABA program starts with a Functional Behavior Assessment. One of our BCBAs will meet with your family and put together an individualized treatment plan based on your child’s strengths and challenges.

Every child in our early intervention program is unique. We work to identify their individual differences, family environment, and available resources, and aim to meet your child where they are to create their personalized autism therapy program from there.

Building a Long-Term Plan for Success

All of Ascend Autism’s ABA therapy services use a practical approach that prepares your child for long-term success throughout their life. We determine the best path for your child’s learning based on their strengths and challenges and provide coaching for parents to help their child meet their goals.

Throughout therapy, our early intervention autism specialists regularly provide you with updates and adjust treatment plans based on your child’s progress. As your child moves toward aging out of the early intervention program and enters school, we can guide you through the next chapter in their life to help them learn and thrive through our after-school ABA therapy program.
