Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental disorder. Its severity varies from person-to-person with symptoms ranging from verbal and non-verbal communication issues to social difficulties to repetitive behaviors. Yet with a proper diagnosis and behavior therapy, individuals with ASD can develop and master core functional capabilities of communication, social skills, daily living skills and adaptive behaviors.
With an estimate of over 1 in 54 children having ASD, families require the right resources to understand the disorder and delivery therapy which can yield meaningfully positive outcomes for each individual.
Fortunately, Ascend Autism can help. Our autism treatment programs for families in Connecticut offers a natural and accessible approach to improving the behaviors of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Ascend Autism’s program is rooted in the principles of a therapy called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) which utilizes a method that engages a child organically. ABA is a scientifically supported therapy and considered the “gold-standard” for addressing Autism, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institute of Mental Health. ABA helps individuals improve communication skills, social skills, memory, focus, and activities of daily living. As a flexible and pragmatic approach, it relies heavily on positive reinforcement.
Autism treatments are most effective when they start as early as possible in the child’s life. Signs of autism can develop in children by 18 months of age, and treatment can start as soon as a medical professional provides a diagnosis. Early intervention usually takes place at home and is customizable to each child’s particular needs. We use different techniques, tools, and games to create a supportive, stimulating environment in a familiar location.

Someone with autism may not naturally intuit meaning from interactions that come naturally to others. For example, eye contact, casual conversation using idioms and euphemisms, and facial or other bodily cues can present significant difficulties to someone with ASD. Therefore, we teach children how to listen, understand, and process verbal and non-verbal cues. Further, we encourage mastery of other one-on-one interactions.
Parents of children with autism face an assortment of challenges, both emotional and practical. Thankfully, Ascend Autism’s treatment programs can help. Our parental services programs show parents how to be more than just caregivers. Instead of being reactive or passive when dealing with ASD, we train you to be a crucial part of your child’s ongoing treatment. You’ll learn to help your child with their key issues, leading to improvements at home, school, and beyond.

Our office will contact your insurance company to verify benefits and we will send you an intake packet for your child.
Once your insurance benefits have been verified, we will arrange an assessment with one of our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA). The BCBA will use these assessments to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for your child.
Once a plan is ready, the BCBA will schedule a meeting with you to review the treatment plan and make any final adjustments before the first therapy session.
After the assessment, the BCBA will submit a service request to the insurance company to recommend the child’s specific hours or therapy. It generally takes about two weeks to process this request.
