Frequently Asked Questions About Autism And ABA

What is ABA and how does it work?

ABA is a scientifically validated therapy that uses principles of behavior to teach skills and reduce problematic behavior. It involves breaking down skills into small steps, using positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors, and collecting data to track progress. Programs are tailored to the individual’s needs, often focusing on communication, social skills, and daily living skills.

Is ABA effective?

ABA is evidence-based and widely recognized as effective for many individuals with autism and other developmental disorders. Success depends on factors like the child’s unique needs, the quality of the program, and consistency. Early intervention (typically ages 6 and under) often yields the best outcomes, but ABA can benefit individuals of all ages.

What is the most effective amount of hours for ABA therapy?

The intensity varies between 10-40 hours per week for comprehensive programs, but the ultimate recommendation is dependent on the specific child’s needs and goals. In general, sessions can occur at home, school, a clinic, or community settings. Having said that, research studies that 20-40 hours per week of comprehensive ABA therapy is often most effective for young children (ages 2-5) with ASD.

What are the costs and is ABA covered by insurance?

Costs vary by provider, location, and session intensity / frequency. Many states mandate insurance coverage for ABA for autism, but coverage depends on the plan. Ascend is an in-network provider with the majority of commercial insurance plans and state Medicaid plans in order to support as many families as possible. Once a family provides insurance information, Ascend can provide detailed information regarding coverage and costs.

How does Ascend Autism customize its center-based programming for each child?

Ascend Autism customizes its early intervention program based on each child’s specific developmental needs. The program includes a range of engaging and age-appropriate activities and treatment plan goals aimed at improving key early development areas, overseen by experienced Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). Personalized treatment plans are created that target specific skills and behaviors, with ongoing adjustments based on data and progress.

What qualifications should an ABA provider have?

Look for providers with Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification, which requires a master’s degree, supervised experience, and passing a national exam. Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) may deliver direct therapy under BCBA supervision, and they should have formal training and certification.
